Specialised in landscapes, thematic paintings. Well-known works include "The oath of the Siberian Partisans" 1933, Russian Museum;
"Collective-Farm Festival" 1936-37, Tretyakov Gallery;
"The Mother of a Partisan" 1943, reworked 1949-50, Trtyakov Gallery.
Chairman of Moscow Artists'Union during Stalin's years; first Secretary of USSR Union of Artists 1958-64.
Became a Soviet academician 1947.
Also a book illustrator.
Decorated festivals in Moscow 1918.
Leading 'liberal' member of Stalin's arts establishment.

Died in Moscow 1964.
