at Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture 1913(12?)-18. Active in Ekaterinburg;
Krasnoyarsk and Aleksandriya, Kherson pr., Ukrane, 1918-c.1922;
Moscowfrom 1922. Began exhibiting 1914? Member of AKhRR 1922-32.
Exhibited wiyh AKhR/R 1923-29. Important shows include "Anti- Imperialist Exhibition", Moscow , 1931;
"Artists of the Russian Federation over Fifteen Years", Leningrad, 1932, Moscow, 1933;
"Fifteen Years of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army", Moscow, 1933;
"Industry of Socialism", Moscow , 1939; "All-Union Art Exhibition", Moscow, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952;
"Soviet Russia", Moscow, 1960. Well-known works include "A Soviet Court"( 1928; Tretyakov Gallery). Taught in AKhR/R Central Studios, Moscow, from 1931; at Moscow Art Institute 1935-37//39?; at Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture / Repin Institute 1939(37?)-62(61?); in creative studios of USSR Academy of Arts, Leningrad, 1949-62 and Moscow , 1962-68; at Surikov Institute 1964-67. Director of Tretyakov Gallery 1951-54; chairman of organising committee of USSR Artists' Union 1953/54?-57;
First Secretary of USSR Artists' Union 1965-68.
Became a Soviet academician 1947 (vice-president of Academy 1953-58, president 1958-62).
Awarded Stalin prizes 1941, 1951;
Orders of Lenin 1953, 1957, 1967;
the "People's Artist of the USSR" 1943.
Also a theatre artist, graphic artist.
Celebrated establishment painter of 1940s -1960s.
Died in Moscow 1973.
